Each year at this time I have the pleasure of joining fire brigades throughout Colchester North as they celebrate their year's activities and honour their members for outstanding leadership, courage and commitment to their communities.
February 21, 2015 was my opportunity to do that in Tatamagouche. Members and their guests gathered at the fire hall for a reception, banquet and presentation of awards. Some of the major awards included Officer of the Year, Firefighter of the Year, and Years of Service medals.
Taking the top prize for Years of Service was Dale Jollymore, who was recognized for 51 years as a member and supporter of the Tatamagouche Fire Department. In his quiet and humble way, Dale accepted the award with pride. Dedication through firefighting to the protection and safety of the community deserves recognition. Countless hours of training is required and ongoing as members respond to a variety of non fire related calls.
Members of the Tatamagouche Fire Department have given support to smaller brigades in dealing with traumatic incidents that sometimes include fatalities. On behalf of those brigades I want to thank Tim Colburn and others for that support.
As the Tatamagouche Brigade continues to grow, there is a need to have current equipment that is capable of responding and as the MLA I am pleased to support applications put forward to the province for financial assistance.
I am also proud to be part of a Government that supports the continuation of the Fire Tax Credit. This is one way of saying thank you for the volunteer service provided to our communities to keep them safe. Eligible firefighters can claim a Fire Tax Credit each year on their income tax return.
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Dale Jollymore for his long service and to thank all members of the Brigade for their dedication and volunteerism. This helps to keep our communities strong and safe.
Karen Casey, MLA
