One of the wonderful opportunities I have as the MLA for Colchester North is to introduce resolutions in the Legislature that acknowledge ordinary people doing extraordinary things. This includes students, community members and organizations that make us proud Nova Scotians.

During the last seven years as your MLA I have been proud to read many, many resolutions. Most recently on April 29th, I stood in my place at the Legislature and read the following:

WHEREAS Tatamagouche, Colchester North, is hosting a Train Convention of model trains, on May 31st and June 1st, and in recognition of the event, Colchester County Council has proclaimed the week of May 27 to June 2 as Train Days in the municipality; and

WHEREAS model trains will be set up in the North Shore Recreation Centre which will also display art work relating to trains by the local elementary school students; and

WHEREAS VIA Rail is sponsoring a prize for the winning entry from each class which will entail a free train ride for the winner and an accompanying adult from Truro to Amherst;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that all members of this House of Assembly congratulate Tatamagouche, Colchester North, for this innovative undertaking, for using it as an educational experience for the elementary students, and for giving train lovers of all ages such an educational and enjoyable experience.

I also was proud to attend the Provincial Volunteer Awards for 2013 and to join award recipient Dave Gunn and his wife Pam for that ceremony on April 15th. Dave Gunn was nominated by the Municipality and received the Provincial Award for his outstanding work in the community, including his leadership in organizing the Train Convention being held there starting May 27th.

This convention of model trains will attract hundreds of visitors to the area and will also acknowledge and include elementary school students. I have accepted an invitation to attend and my four year old grandson, who is a lover of Thomas the train, will be joining me for the excitement.

I encourage all members of the community to acknowledge the volunteers’ time in organizing this event and the leadership of Dave Gunn for his outstanding efforts.
